To some, soccer seems like child's play.
But injuries can - and do - occur in a blur.
More than 200,000 youths under 15 are treated each year for soccer-related injuries - many of which can be prevented if players wear proper safety gear and follow the rules. Here are some tips from SafeUSA, an alliance of public agencies and private organizations dedicated to injury prevention:
If the goal posts on your field(s) don't have padding, talk to school or park authorities about adding it. Injuries from hitting a post can be severe and even fatal.
Before starting any program or competition, take your child for a physical to assess any injury risks.
Make sure your child wears all the required safety gear every time he or she plays and practices - shin guards and shoes with molded cleats or ribbed soles.
Insist that your child warm up and stretch before playing.
Teach your child not to play through pain. Stop right away, and see a doctor if necessary; follow orders for recovery.
Make sure first aid is available at all games and practices and that officials and coaches enforce rules and encourage safe play.
Ask your pediatrician whether it's safe for your child to "head" the ball and, if so, make sure he or she knows how to avoid head and neck injury.
Don't let your child climb on the goal posts or hang or swing from the crossbar.
Above all, keep soccer fun. Putting too much focus on winning can make your child push too hard and risk injury.
