DO YOU HAVE GOOD VISION?
Are You Doing Everything to Keep it?
About a million eye injuries occur each year 43% in the home, and 90% of them preventable.
Here are some safety tips from the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
- Keep a pair of tight-fitting safety goggles in the trunk of your car in case you need to jump-start the battery acid, sparks and debris can come flying out.
- Read chemical labels carefully to avoid burns from such things as cleaning fluids, detergents and ammonia. Point spray nozzles away from you. Wear goggles, and wash hands when done.
- Check for yard debris stones and twigs, for instance and put on safety goggles before using a lawnmower, power trimmer or edger.
- In a workshop or garage, shield your eyes from flying fragments, fumes, dust particles, sparks and splashing chemicals.
- Wear appropriate protective eyewear at work and for high-risk sports such as hockey, lacrosse, football, basketball, baseball and paintball. Ditto when swimming, particularly in ponds and lakes that may contain substances that can irritate your eyes; also, chlorine in pools can make eyes red and puffy.
- Wear sunglasses with UV protection. Make sure the label states that the lenses block 99 or 100 percent of both UVA and UVB rays.
- Dont play with fireworks of any kind.
-
Make sure gifts you give are safe. Avoid toys with sharp, protruding parts, including darts, bows and arrows, BB or pellet guns or air-powered rifles. These toys can cause severe eye injuries or blindness.
